Becoming Neutral, here I meant ‘Carbon Neutral’, is a responsibility rather than a challenge for any corporate, industry and individuals. We often tend to take such aspects casually while driving any business. Carbon neutrality means having a balance between emitting carbon and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. To achieve net zero emissions, all worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will have to be counterbalanced by carbon sequestration.
The businesses mostly focus on financial sustainability and concern of their environmental responsibility remains an after-action rather than a parallel activity. However, from 2019 onwards, there has been a lot of excitement, majorly driven by the private sector by science-based targets. It’s also known as SBTi in general, here “i” stands for Initiative.
SBTi has becoming instrumental in the journey of Neutrality, this is because Science-based targets show organizations how much they should reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated from the business operations and how quickly they need to reduce them to prevent the worst effects of climate change. As a carbon market professional we have always realized that awareness is important in combating impacts of emissions, however more important is to understand where one stands in terms of their actual/quantified emissions caused by their activities and possible ways to tackle this. SBTi is playing a pivot role in this route, however responsibility still lies with the companies to take forward steps and participate in initiatives, actions, commitments towards carbon neutrality.
